A good pair of sunglasses: a smart investment
Sunglasses have become an essential fashion accessory. But that’s not their only function. First and foremost, sunglasses offer invaluable protection against UV rays. And those are much more harmful than you might think.
1. Sunlight can lead to serious eye diseases
Just as we protect our skin from excessive sun exposure by applying sunscreen, we must also protect our eyes. This is because sunlight can have fatal consequences for our cornea and retina. It can cause cataracts, macular degeneration (age-related retinal damage), and even eye cancer.
2. Glare and wind can irritate the eyes
Sunglasses not only protect against sunlight. They also reduce light reflection off water or even on cloudy days. Sunglasses also provide relief from sand and wind, two major culprits when it comes to irritated and dry eyes.
3. Cheap sunglasses provide inadequate protection
Sunglasses from the supermarket often do not block UV light effectively. This means UV rays can enter the eye unhindered, potentially causing eye diseases. Therefore, opt for a good pair of sunglasses with a label that guarantees 100% UVA and UVB protection.
We must also protect children’s eyes. Children’s eyes are more vulnerable, and if they don’t wear sunglasses, it can cause long-term damage deep inside the eye. So, put on those sunglasses – they look cool too!
